Preamble

An Art School Book Club

Not reviews, more like study notes for art students.

What can an art student learn from this blog?

Book smart - I have a few books, and read most of them. But what to do with a book after they have been read? Read them to someone else! During the school year, I try to bring a different mix of books each week to reference and talk about. Previously it was off the cuff but I want to be more organized about it so I am starting an Art School Book Club here to summarize what I have learned from the books I’ve read.

Old school - I think blogging really helped me become interested and better at writing. So I want to restart that tradition with this blog, even if blogging is now considered old fashioned.

What not to do - For years I tried to make my work publishable for kids literature, but was never quite able to pull it off. But I don’t think I am alone, many artists are like me and cannot quite carry the ball into the end zone. I will share some of the things I did wrong, as well as how it still turned out alright.

What to do - In contrast my wife Renata, has had great success in getting her work published. She recently passed the twenty book mark, and I have been along for the ride the whole time. Contemporary culture loves the idea of the individual creator. But the reality is it is a team effort. I will share what I think made the difference for Renata, and how we worked together to make her art reach critical mass.
